Free is a Lie

偶然在網路上看到 Indie Phone 的作者之一，Aral Balkan，在 RSA 上的演講: Free is a Lie。

該演講提到現今許多商業公司提供的服務，雖然稱之為免費，但實際上是藉此機會收集個人資訊供其使用，這就是所謂的 Free is a Lie (免費是一場謊言)。

演講中引述到 Eric Schmidt 說的一段話:

If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

我不同意 Eric Schmidt 的看法，我認為:

If I have something that I don't want anyone to know, unless the “something” is illegal, you shouldn't be peeking it in the first place.

不想 (don’t want) 讓人知道，和不能 (can’t be) 讓人知道是兩回事。顯然的，Eric Schmidt 故意模糊兩者之間的界線。

演講中也提到話題不斷的 Firefox OS。Aral Balkan 一開始因為其開源 (進而有可能擺脫商業公司對隱私權的控制) 而非常興奮，但實際使用過後，卻只得到非常糟糕的使用者體驗。

Aral Balkan 最後得到一個結論: 我們需要一個由使用者體驗所驅動的開源項目 (Experiene-driven & Open)。由此誕生了 Indie Phone。

姑且不論 Indie Phone 的成功與否，我們都應該思考一下現今許多免費的服務，其背後的代價究竟為何。我認為這是一個值得深思的問題。
